Telephone Connection / VOIP

While some homeworkers use their mobile or their home landline to make calls while working from home, VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) has become very common due to the potentially huge cost savings. VOIP can used using software on a PC or laptop, or with a SIP phone or normal phone connected to a SIP adapter.

For corporate homeworkers, there are two flavours of VOIP. The first is where the homeworker uses a third party VOIP network (like BlueFace or Skype) to make outgoing (and possible incoming calls). The second is where the homeworker is connected to the company telephone switch via a VOIP connection. In the scenario, the homeworker can answer his/her office extension as if they were working in the office, and all out bound calls are made via the companies office telephone connections.

Because of the potentially high costs savings with VOIP, especially on International and conference calls, and because of its potentially seamless integration with a  company’s telephone network, VOIP is rapidly becoming a must for organisations who strategically want to implement an organised homeworking policy for employees.
