Mobile Email and Internet Many handheld devices allow users to send and receive e-mails or to access the internet on the move. The most common brand to date has been the BlackBerry, which has a server (usually provided by your carrier) where the company I.T. Administrator can add e-mail accounts allowing the user to send and receive e-mails through the mobile.
While Blackberry uses its own proprietary operating systems, some devices are now using Microsoft Windows CE. These devices tend to be more expensive, but they do offer full integration with the company’s MS Exchange servers (enabling features such as mobile calendars, contacts and task lists as well as the important feature to delete a user’s email content in case of stolen or lost laptop).
Mobile Broadband / 3G All mobile operators in Ireland offer 3G mobile broadband services. While these offer mobile workers broadband on the move, they can suffer from degraded speeds due to coverage, contention, and the inherent data speed restrictions of USB ports. That said, mobile broadband is an important addition to the range of broadband options available to Irish homeworkers and mobile workers. |
